Cyber-Bullying Coming To A Cell Phone Near You

This type of bullying happens in the “physical” world and that world has geographic limits. Cyber bullying is making school days even more painful for many children. Bullying in cyberspace is not bound by school hours, school days, or facing the intended bully victim. Unfortunately, the anonymous nature of the internet often insulates the bully from the consequences of their damaging behavior. As the number of households with internet access approaches saturation and cell phone ownership expands to the 100 million mark, so do the ways kids bully each other. Cyber Bullying in the form of text messages, emails, photos, and website postings can go school-wide in minutes and global in days. Slanderous information sent out into cyberspace is difficult, if not impossible, to expunge. Cyber Bullying often takes the form of cyber gossip, where damaging content is based on whim; not facts. Cyber Bullying Getting Bigger: Studies indicate that cyber-bullying incidents have quadrupled in five years. A 2000 survey by the Crimes Against Children Research center at the University of New Hampshire reported 6% of young people had experienced some form of cyber bullying. In 2005, studies of 1500 Internet-using adolescents found that over one-third had been cyber bulled and half of those admitted to cyber bullying others (Hinduja and Patchin, In Review.) A 2005 study by National Children’s Home Charity revealed that 20% had been cyber-bullying victims. A 2004 survey conducted by i-Safe America of 1556 adolescents found that 42% had been bullied online. How Cyber Bulling Messages Are Communicated:

• Text or digital imaging messages sent on cell phones

• E-mails

• Instant messaging

• Web pages

• Web logs (blogs)

• Chat rooms or discussion groups

• Other information communication technologies Cyber-bullying Victims and Perpetrators:

• Girls were about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber-bullying.

• 62% said that they had been cyber-bullied by another student at school, and 46% had been cyber-bullied by a friend.

• 55% didn’t know who had cyber-bullied them.

Only 20% of cyber-bullying victims tell their parents about the incident. Victims are most likely to tell a friend 42%). (2005, Kowalski et al., Electronic bullying among school-aged children and youth.) Ten Tips: Parents Cyber-Bullying Preemption

1.Consider installing filtering and blocking software, but understand clearly that proactive parents are the only real deterrent and the best resource for bullying preemption.

2.Keep your home computer(s) in easily viewable places, such as a family room or kitchen.

3.Model the behavior you want to see in your child

4.Talk regularly with your child about on-line activities he or she is involved in.

5.Set firm guidelines for cell phone use and monitor that behavior.

6.Talk specifically about cyber-bullying. Explain that that it is harmful and unacceptable behavior.

7.Outline your expectations for responsible online behavior and clearly explain the consequences for inappropriate behavior.

8.Encourage your child to tell you immediately if he or she is a victim of cyber-bullying. Tell your child not to respond to the bully.

9.Stay calm. Plan in advance how you will calmly receive the news that your child is being bullied and the solution steps you will take. You will want the evidence. Tell your child to save the bullying messages or photo.

10.Call your child’s school; ask the principal what measurable, bullying preemptive, activity-based programs they have in place today. Ask about results.

Some Tips About Cyber Bullying

May be you are quite aware of the term ‘Cyber bullying’. The reason is Cyber bullying quite commonly happens in your everyday lives. It is totally a new form of bullying others using your Cyber Space.

Do not you think it is horrible? Talking about bullying innocent people with your kids is just similar as talking about sex with them. As parents it should be our prime responsibility to get more engrossed in our children’s future. Therefore we should be aware about Cyber Safety.

To make this process easier, check the set of instructions and get to know how you can help your kids from staying away from such criminal offences.

Instructions

Step 1

Know what Cyber Bullying exactly is? This often takes place through instant messaging Email, through the Cyber chat rooms and certain other electronic gadgets that includes cell phones of camera. These cyber bullies continue their process of bullying others by forwarding and spreading certain hurtful images which may or may not include messages. These technologies are used for harassing the victims of the bullies.

Step 2

We should take care that our kids should freely reach school and feel safe. Being parents we should have an active role in our youngsters’ lives. We should make their future secure by discussing with them about the possibilities of getting harassed by the Cyber Bullies. We should be aware of the facts that what are going on in their personal lives.

Step 3

If you are seeing your child spending a lot of time on the Internet, you should monitor the topics on what they are busy with. You should also restrict their time of using the Internet and also limit their access of websites by installing certain cyber safe softwares. Whatever may be your operating system, the only thing you do is to check the installation processes of a Cyber Safety software and stop your child from accessing the risky sites.

Step 4

While browsing the Internet, if you find your child being entrapped by a Cyber Bully, try to contact the people. But if such bullying process continues after informing them try to take legal aid.

Step 5

The top signs which shows whether your child gets bullied include:

Kids making excuses for not going to school.
They can show you sign of getting bullied by their erratic behavior. They may remain sad or frustrated at times even when nothing has happened.
Often it is seen that kids could not share everything with their parents but they can share it with their friends. But if they stop sharing with their closest pals you should give attention towards your children.
Sometimes your child’s belongings gets stolen.

Step 6

Being a parent if you are required to receive further advices you can contact the local school PTA. If your state does not have laws for these troubles you can contact your local senator and wait to view the procedures with which your kids’ life can get safe.

Cyber Bullying majorly happens through Email. Just regularly monitor your kids Email box and keep them away from this. Happy Emailing.

A Five Point Guide for Reading to Babies

Have you ever wondered why some kids actually choose to bury their heads in a well-thumbed Lord of the Rings novel, and others just want to watch it on DVD? While we often assume that there are those who are “readers” by nature, and those who are not, we may actually play a larger role in instilling the love of words in our children than we realise, and from a surprisingly early age.

It is commonly understood that reading aloud is beneficial in developing a love of books and therefore a love of learning in children. However, when should it all begin? Some parents begin reading to their babies while they are still in the womb. Others begin when you’re child starts bringing books home to be read for homework. Australian children’s author Mem Fox believes in reading to your child from as early as possible; she suggests, “Reading aloud to children everyday from their first year of life until they start school (and beyond) changes their lives forever” (‘Herald/Sun’ 7/12/2003).

So just how do you read to your baby? This simple five-point guide may help get you started:

1. When to read

Find a moment when your baby is quiet but alert, perhaps after a feed, play or sleep. Once you are familiar with your baby’s routine and ways of communicating with you, it will become easier to find the best time.

2. Where to read

Sit in a cuddly position with your baby to read. Children come to associate reading with comfort and enjoyment this way. Make sure the book is close to them so that they can see and touch the book.

3. What to read

Have some very simple Board Books, or Cloth Books on hand to read. Not just stories, but books with songs and nursery rhymes are great as are interactive books with things to touch, feel and hear are very appealing for babies. Head to your local library or bookshop - there is a wonderful selection to choose from these days. Special e-Readers are also a good option. For example VTech Flip. According to the article “Digital Readers for Children” (dbReaders), it is the kid's version of the Kindle, Nook or Sony reader, and is in full color with animation and illustrations.

Books about things you may have done, or seen with your baby are a great way to expand on and reinforce recent events. For example, if you saw ducks in the park, read a book with pictures of ducks in it.

4. How to read

Read with animation in your voice. Don’t worry about feeling silly; you will be rewarded when your baby grows to love particular parts of a book because of the sounds you make. This is also known as “voice inflection” and is defined as “the way we change the tone of our voice to emphasise key words” (‘Speaking of Speech’, Harrington and Le Beau).

With the right tone of voice and inflection appropriate to a baby’s development you can read almost anything. The Editorial section of a newspaper can even be read to calm a baby, if the tone of voice is right!

Use all the senses. If the story has wind blowing, then gently blow into your baby’s neck. If the story has movement, then bounce your baby gently on your knee. If the crocodile “snaps”, then gently pretend to “snap” your baby’s tummy with your fingers. Once they have become familiar with the story they will begin to “squirm” in delightful anticipation as the “crocodile gets ready to snap”. This is actually teaching story prediction (knowing what comes next).

5. What then?

Once your baby has a few books they like, then leave them in accessible places for them to find, the bottom of a bookshelf or a basket. In time you will begin to see them pulling out the books and “reading” them for themselves. They will flip the pages and chatter to themselves. You may even hear them start to mimic the voices you do. By the time they can move around the house they will be bringing their favourite books for you to read to them. A wonderful, but maddening thing when you are trying to cook dinner!

The ‘pre-reading’ skills can begin to develop from a very early age. Skills such as holding the books the right way up, turning the pages in sequence (babies, as young as four months, can flip a board book page over with their fist as you are reading to them), exploring pictures and learning that the words are read to tell a story. These are all essential skills for children learning to read.

Most importantly, read for the fun of it!

Reading isn’t about trying to push your child to be a gifted baby; it is about giving the gift of stories to your child. The discovery that there is something lovely within the pages of a book is the best reading lesson you can ever give your baby, and when they’re older, they may just be carrying the latest kids’ novel around with them, instead of a Nintendo D.S.
